WHO ARE WE?

A small, but growing team of 6 women, working from homes all over the U.S. but coming together to spread calligraphy and creativity to as many people as possible.

Our mission is to help people get past the negative bullshit blocking their creativity and have fun pursuing their calligraphy dreams. (Oh, and we embrace self-expression and curse words, so if that delights you, then great! You’re our people.)

Crooked Calligraphy was started in 2016 by Shinah Chang - a former corporate lawyer who quit six years ago with no backup plan in place. Shinah used to work 80+ hours a week making rich companies richer. She did NOT want to re-create that hustle mentality in her own company. So, we do HIGH-QUALITY work. We make an IMPACT in the world. We show up on time and do what we say we’re going to do. But we also know the importance of balance and believe that we do our best work when we're in alignment, not stressed out.

WHO ARE YOU?

  • You LOVE calligraphy (and are pretty darn good at it!) and are excited to help spread that love to your students!

  • Ideally, you have completed Crooked Calligraphy's Modern Calligraphy 101 and Modern Calligraphy 201 courses (you can still apply if you haven't!)

  • You can connect easily with students - they trust you.

  • You use positive language and you cheer your students on throughout their journey

  • You love teaching and understand that each student has their own unique learning experience while taking the course

  • You enjoy talking through pain points of learning calligraphy and can offer students solutions

  • You love being a part of a team who works together to provide a great student experience

  • You are a good listener and can sense the needs of your students

  • You come from a place of compassion and can offer understanding and emotional validation when your students express frustration and disappointment

AND

  • While you may not be familiar with all the “techy” stuff, you are an adaptable, proactive person who doesn’t mind problem-solving when it comes to tech and software

  • You’re solution-oriented, especially when you see something that could be done better

  • You’re not afraid to propose your own ideas to generate revenue

  • You double-check everything you put out into the world!

  • You like to take initiative and be proactive

As you can probably tell, we’re looking for a unique combination here: the ideal candidate is an experienced modern calligrapher who also has a love for teaching and guiding students throughout their Crooked Calligraphy experience. You will be responsible for providing personalized feedback to students when they submit their weekly projects as they work through our courses. You will be a guide and a resource for students as they progress in their calligraphy journey. These projects must receive feedback within 2-3 business days of their submission. You will also play an active role in the Crooked Calligraphy Facebook group, helping to answer questions, engage the students and foster our amazing student and alumni community. You will also be a part of the Student Success Team which ensures that each student receives the incredible and wildly successful student experience as promised.

If you are looking for a traditional work environment with strict hierarchies and lots of hand-holding, this is not the place for you.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with the following platforms and software:

  • Instagram

  • Facebook Pages and Groups

  • Google Drive

You must also:

  • Be a quick learner who is able to work proactively and independently

  • Learn/work through the Modern Calligraphy 101 and 201 curriculum if you have not already taken the courses

  • Be willing to learn new platforms such as Teachable and Airtable, where our students learn and submit their work

  • Be looking for responsibility and complete tasks on time, every week.

  • Be organized and detail-oriented (in fact, if you’re reading this, include the word “leapfrog” somewhere in your application, ok?)

  • Enjoy communicating clearly and openly, and receiving honest feedback

  • Be up for honest conversations and showing up as your authentic self, even if it’s uncomfortable — this is where growth happens

This position is NOT for you if:

  • You like being micromanaged

  • You want to chat with coworkers all day

  • You ask questions BEFORE googling or doing some basic research

  • You sit and twiddle your thumbs if you do not have enough tasks to fill your time

  • You make the same mistakes multiple times

  • You just want to learn how to start your own creative business

HOURS/TIMING:

  • 10-15 hours per week Mon-Fri (hours will fluctuate somewhat depending on the number of student projects submitted each week)

  • Must be available for a weekly team meeting at 10:30 am pacific time on Tuesdays

  • We’ll start with a 30-day trial period, and then have another check-in at 60 days, to ensure we are a great fit.

PERKS OF THIS JOB:

  • Completely remote, so you can work from home in your pajamas

  • Flexible. We are a fully remote team. We will expect you to log in at least 4 days a week, depending on feedback workload. However, we are also all working moms so as long as you complete all your assigned tasks on time, there is a lot of flexibility in your work hours.

  • If you have most of the skills we are looking for but need to learn more about one or two of them, we are willing to purchase a course to help train you.

  • Our team! We have high standards, but we communicate them clearly. We have a drama-free workplace. We acknowledge each other's victories, admit and learn from our mistakes, and share fun life stuff occasionally, too.

  • Quarterly learning opportunities.

PAY

  • $20/hr

BELOW IS A LIST OF DETAILED TASKS THAT WE NEED HELP WITH:

TEACHER'S ASSISTANT:

  • Providing personalized feedback on Student Projects submitted in Modern Calligraphy 101 and 201

  • Identifying exceptional students for Marketing/Testimonial purposes

COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT:

  • Answering questions and commenting in our student Facebook group

  • Creating content and scheduling posts in our student Facebook group

We acknowledge systemic racism exists and are actively investing in and working to build an equitable, inclusive, anti-racist company from the inside out.
