Modern Calligraphy 101 vs. 201 - which is right for you?

Modern Calligraphy 101 vs 201

DECIDING BETWEEN MY MODERN CALLIGRAPHY 101 AND 201 PROGRAMS?

Here’s the difference in a nutshell:

Modern Calligraphy 101 teaches pointed-pen calligraphy from the very beginning BASICS, all the way to adding some style and bounce to your lettering.

  • You can take this course if you’ve never touched a calligraphy pen and nib before, but it’s also beneficial if you’ve tried a little bit of calligraphy, but feel like you need more expert guidance on the fundamental techniques.

Modern Calligraphy 201 assumes you know the calligraphy basics and teaches you how to create your own unique STYLE by building your own alphabet and learning flourishes and composition.

  • This course is NOT specific to pointed-pen calligraphy - so you can take it with brush pens, too!

Here’s a comparison of the curriculum:

And here are a few questions you can ask yourself if you fall somewhere in between:

Question #1: Do you know the BASIC STROKES of calligraphy?

These are some of the basic strokes that I teach

They look something like this (although you’ll see some variations depending on the teacher).

If you DO NOT know these… then you’ll probably want to take Modern Calligraphy 101. You can get to a certain point by just copying calligraphy alphabets, but if you want to really understand the fundamental shapes that create each letter (so that you can build your own unique alphabets later on), it’s best to learn the basic strokes.

Question #2: Do you want to learn how to use a pointed, flexible nib to create “pointed-pen calligraphy”?

This is a pointed, flexible nib in an oblique nib holder

If yes, then Modern Calligraphy 101 will really help you.

Even if you’ve been using brush markers for months, switching over to a pointed, flexible nib can be TRICKY. You need to learn a very specific technique and even a slightly wrong angle can ruin your nibs and lead to scratchiness, ink blobs, and general frustration.

If you DO NOT want to learn how to use a pointed, flexible nib, you feel comfortable with the basics using brush pens, and you want to learn how to add STYLE to your lettering - then Modern Calligraphy 201 is the better course for you!

Question #3: What kind of learner are you?

If you’re the kind of student who loves a challenge and can’t wait to race ahead to the advanced lessons, Modern Calligraphy 201 might be perfect for you because it’s a challenging course.

On the other hand, if you prefer to really master one concept before moving on to the next step, then you might benefit from strengthening your foundations with Modern Calligraphy 101.

There’s no one right answer. Instead, ask yourself the question: which course would be the most FUN for me?

Ok, here’s the great news!
