After 8 years of working with a life coach, quitting a lucrative law job to build up a million-dollar calligraphy business, and then taking a huge, risky break from that business…
I think I’ve finally figured out the BEST WAY to make DECISIONS for myself.
…And it’s not “trust your feelings” or “what does your body tell you?”
Because here’s something I’ve learned: a decision that is absolutely right for you can feel absolutely TERRIBLE in your body. And a decision that is wrong for you can feel pretty comfortable.
It’s not the FEELINGS that tell me what’s right and wrong for me. It’s what’s UNDERNEATH the feeling.
Let me explain with a couple examples.
EXAMPLE #1: Creating my first online course.
I really wanted to create a calligraphy course. And once I did it, It helped me grow in ways I never imagined for myself. It helped me earn so much money and, more importantly, pride in myself.
And it felt really shitty sometimes while I was in the midst of creating it.
I almost gave up a LOT.
But my life coach helped me to push through in a loving way and get it done.
WHY?
Because the shitty feelings were all coming from FEAR.
I had never created an online course before. There was so much I didn’t know, so much I could potentially get WRONG.
And that felt really bad for my perfectionist brain who wanted to get everything RIGHT.
“Which course platform should I choose? How many worksheets should I include? How can I ensure my students have the best chance of actually learning calligraphy?”
BUT ALSO…
“What if nobody signs up? What if people do pay me but immediately want a refund because the course sucks. What if creating this course turns out to be a waste of thousands of dollars and 8 months of my life?”
All the bad feelings were coming from uncertainty and fear.
EXAMPLE #2: Deciding to quit my business back in 2022
Things were feeling pretty shitty then, too, but the call to quit was coming from a place of LOVE.
“You need a break. This isn’t what you truly desire. Stop pushing yourself so hard - your value is not in your achivements.” —> This inner voice sounded gentle and insistent and loving.
And the desire to keep going with my business and push through the difficulty came from FEAR.
“If you stop now, you’ll be giving up so much money. You’ll never be able to build up a business this profitable again. Everyone will forget about you if you quit…” —> This inner voice sounded frantic and afraid.
Now, I’d like to walk you through an (admittedly self-serving) third example.
